Research mentoring for residents, fellows and early-career attending physicians who want to do research and have not yet published. You work at your own pace, ask by message whenever you are stuck, and get a written reply from Dr. Tsai, a radiologist who has taught clinicians research methods and writing for more than a decade.

The six stages

The six stages where people most often get stuck

After many years of teaching, Dr. Tsai has found that these are the six stages where participants most often get stuck. Together they are his picture of the whole publication process. The six stages are a map, not a sequence of gates: physicians move back and forth between them. What feels like a problem with a figure is often a question or a design that needs another look, and going back is part of the work. Ask Dr. Tsai from wherever you are.

How it works

How the mentoring works

It is built around written messages, so it fits around call schedules and shifts. You can start when a project is ready.

  1. Choose a course

Pick one of four online courses: clinical research, meta-analysis, network meta-analysis, or figures and figure legends. Use what it teaches to start a paper on your own topic. See the courses

  2. At your own pace

There are no fixed cohorts and no meeting times. Work when you can, and ask when you are stuck.

  3. Ask by message

Write whenever you are stuck, in any order. There is nothing to pick or tick. Dr. Tsai replies in writing, in principle within one working day.

  4. Track your submissions

Log the journal, the date, the outcome and the number of revision rounds, so the whole path from first draft to decision is in one place.

  5. Research use is optional

We ask for a short background profile. Separately, you can choose to let de-identified data be used to study where physicians get stuck on the way to publication. If you decline, you receive the same mentoring.

Common questions, from research to publication

All 全部 31 articles → 篇 →
Replying to reviewersA reviewer asks for sample size and power in my retrospective study. Can I ignore it?No. Do the calculation with an online tool, put it in a table in your reply letter, and keep the tone polite. Data and statisticsNot every study reports an SD. Can I use studies that give a 95% or 90% CI instead?Yes. Convert the CI to an SD by hand (the width times √n, divided by 3.92 for a 95% CI or 3.29 for a 90% CI; use t values for small groups), then enter it into CMA. The Cochrane Handbook gives the formulas and is easy to cite. 手動把 CI 換成 SD(CI 寬度乘以 √n,95% CI 除以 3.92、90% CI 除以 3.29;每組人數少時改用 t 值),再輸入 CMA。 After you submitThree months with no news from the journal: should I write to the editor?Usually no. If you must, wait 1.5 times the journal's typical turnaround, and write to offer help, not to complain.
